A fully accredited online university, Capella University offers master and doctoral degree programs in education with 14 specializations for kindergarten through 12th grade. Students at Capella University enjoy conveniences not often afforded at traditional universities, including new classes that begin on a monthly basis and no scheduled class meetings.
Students with credits from another college or university may be able to transfer those credits, up to a maximum of 12 quarter credits, to their teaching program at Capella University.
Students can earn a Master's of Science degree in one of seven specializations, including curriculum and instruction, early childhood education, English language learning and teaching, K-12 studies in education, leadership in educational administration, reading and literacy, and special education teaching.
The students who enroll in the graduate programs generally already have their teaching license, and Capella University makes it clear that the programs are not designed to satisfy the requirements necessary for gaining certification or licensure for either teachers or administrators.
Those students with a master's degree who either do not want or who are not ready to begin doctoral work may opt for the Education Specialist (EdS) degree in curriculum and instruction or leadership in educational administration. Courses equivalent to those in the doctoral program can generally be applied to PhD requirements should students decide to later pursue a doctorate at Capella University.
Earning a doctoral degree is the pinnacle of success in higher education. Capella University offers both the PhD and the EdD. The EdD is designed for educators interested in reading and literacy and is, according to Capella University, one of only a handful of such programs in the country.
The EdD can generally be completed in approximately three years with students taking courses in sequential order as determined by Capella University. Students in the EdD program focus on topics ranging from program and development to assessment and evaluation.
Capella University also features doctoral programs leading to the PhD in curriculum and instruction, K-12 studies in education, leadership in educational administration and special education leadership.
The doctoral programs in education and the EdS require students to complete three residency requirements of three days each in select cities throughout the United States. Costs for the residency are separate and must be paid in advance.
