Nova Southeastern University
With an onsite campus in Florida, Nova Southeastern University also boasts an extensive online school of education that offers 21 undergraduate and graduate degrees with over 80 specializations.
Undergraduate students in The Fischler School can choose between one of 12 educational concentrations leading to the Bachelor of Science degree, including elementary education, middle grade English education, child development, and secondary social studies education.
In addition to the core curriculum, all students must complete a full-time, 12-week student teaching assignment and maintain a 2.5 GPA to earn their B.S. in Education. Many of the B.S. degrees lead to Florida teaching certification. Florida does have a teaching reciprocity agreement, allowing teachers to transfer their certification to their home state, if available.
The Fischler School offers the Master of Science in Education degree with more than 20 areas of specialization, including computer science education, educational media, and preschool education.
The M.S. in Education degrees require all students to complete, in addition to core courses, an Applied Professional Experience. The Applied Professional Experience allows students to create a portfolio of their work completed during their program that includes reflective prose on their experiences and samples of the work they have graded.
As with the B.S. degree, select M.S. degree programs lead to initial certification in Florida and in Nevada.
The Educational Specialist degree is available in 14 specializations, including teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), educational leadership, curriculum and teaching, and reading education. Typical students in the Ed.S program are already licensed teachers or are students with master's degrees who want an advanced degree.
Students in the Ed.S program must maintain a 3.0 GPA and complete a capstone course - in which they develop a portfolio of their work during the program - to graduate from the program.
A terminal degree, the doctorate holds the most prestige. The Fischler School offers the Doctor of Education (Ed.D). Doctoral candidates can choose from 11 concentrations and 13 minors.
While the Doctor of Education program is tailored toward individual student's professional goals, all doctoral candidates will complete the same components: Core doctoral seminars, courses in student's particular concentration, research, the minor, and the dissertation.
To successfully complete the Doctor of Education, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA, complete all required courses and electives and an applied dissertation.
