Saint Joseph's University:
With St. Joseph's University's Online Accelerated Teacher Certification Program (OATCERT), professionals who have not yet earned their teaching certification can earn the OATCERT in only four semesters, with the final semester dedicated to student teaching.
Upon completion of the program, students will earn their initial Pennsylvania teaching certification. Because Pennsylvania has a reciprocity agreement with 33 states, students who want to teach in other states can apply to have their licenses transferred to eligible states. Learn more about the reciprocity agreement.
St. Joseph's University allows students to earn the OATCERT independently or with a Master's in Secondary Education with a concentration in one of the main content areas such as math or English. The Master's of Secondary Education requires students to complete 36 credits in approximately six semesters, five semesters to complete coursework and the final semester for student teaching.
Students opting for the Master's in Secondary Education take a range of courses on topics including American education, the psychology of teaching, reading in content areas, and law and American education.
Those students who are currently teaching are permitted to complete their teaching requirement in their own classrooms while new teachers must find their own teaching placements.
The Master's Degree in Special Education is designed for teachers who want to specialize in special education and those educators who want to advance in the current positions. Students in the Master's Degree in Special Education program generally already have their teaching license and will learn how to work effectively with special needs students during their studies.
St. Joseph's University also offers a Master's Degree in Special Education with a specialization and certification in the Wilson Reading System, a system designed to help students with learning disabilities read more effectively.
Students interested in instructional technology can earn a certificate or, by taking only two more classes, can earn both their Master's in Instructional Technology and certification in Instructional Technology. The Master's or certificate in Instruction Technology is ideal for professionals interested in obtaining positions as an education specialist, a media specialist, or a technology lead.
